If you’re trying to learn GoHighLevel, the sheer size of the platform can make it difficult to know where to start.
The good news is that you don’t need to learn all of HighLevel.
In my experience, there are three practical ways to learn GoHighLevel:
- Teach yourself using HighLevel’s help resources, videos, AI and experimentation.
- Use structured HighLevel training to learn the important parts of the platform in a logical way.
- Learn while implementing HighLevel in your own business, so you’re building something useful at the same time.
For most business owners and marketing teams, I favour a combination of structured learning and hands-on implementation.

Learn something. Use it. Understand why it works. Then move on to the next thing you actually need.
My biggest piece of advice: Don’t try to master HighLevel. Work out what you need HighLevel to do for your business, then learn the parts required to make that happen.
I’ve worked with CRM and marketing automation since 2009 and have personally onboarded more than 100 new HighLevel users through my own HighLevel agency, MarketerM8.
One of the most common mistakes I see is people approaching HighLevel as a piece of software they need to master.
You don’t.
You need to become good at the parts of HighLevel that matter to your business.
GoHighLevel or HighLevel?
If you’ve searched for how to learn GoHighLevel, how to use HighLevel or GoHighLevel tutorials, these are all referring to the same platform.
GoHighLevel is now generally branded as HighLevel, although GoHighLevel and the abbreviation GHL are still widely used.
I’ll generally call it HighLevel throughout this guide.
Is HighLevel Difficult to Learn?
I don’t think the individual features in HighLevel are particularly difficult to learn.
The challenge is the sheer size of the platform.
A new HighLevel user can be presented with:
- Contacts
- Conversations
- Opportunities
- Calendars
- Workflows
- Email marketing
- Forms and surveys
- Websites and funnels
- Social media
- Reputation management
- Courses and communities
- Payments and ecommerce
- AI tools
It’s easy to assume you need to understand all of them.
In reality, most businesses should start with a much smaller set of tools.
Start With the Business Problem, Not the HighLevel Feature
This is probably the most important principle I use when helping somebody learn HighLevel.
Don’t start by asking, “What does this feature do?”
Start by asking:
“What am I trying to improve in my business?”
Perhaps your business:
- isn’t following up new enquiries quickly enough;
- has leads disappearing because nobody remembers to chase them;
- spends too much time arranging appointments;
- needs to generate more Google reviews;
- wants to reactivate old customers;
- needs better visibility of its sales pipeline;
- wants to automate repetitive marketing and administration;
- or needs someone answering enquiries outside normal office hours.
Each of those problems leads you towards a different part of HighLevel.
That’s much easier than trying to learn the entire platform and hoping you’ll eventually work out how to apply it.
A Simple Way to Understand How HighLevel Fits Together
When I’m helping somebody new to HighLevel, I find it useful to think about a simple customer journey:
Someone enquires β They become a contact β The enquiry becomes a sales opportunity β You communicate with them β They book an appointment β HighLevel follows up β They become a customer β You continue marketing to them
Once you understand that journey, many of the different HighLevel features start to make sense.
Contacts store information about the person.
Conversations bring communications together.
Opportunities and pipelines show where that prospect is in your sales process.
Calendars allow them to book appointments.
Workflows automate what happens before, during and after those stages.
Email, SMS and WhatsApp give you ways of communicating with them.
HighLevel then adds many more tools around that core journey.
Once you understand this basic structure, learning the individual features becomes considerably easier.
Three Ways to Learn GoHighLevel
Let’s look more closely at the three approaches.
There isn’t one correct way to learn HighLevel. Which is best depends on how you learn, how quickly you need to make progress and what you’re trying to achieve.
1. Teach Yourself HighLevel
You can absolutely learn HighLevel yourself.
There is a huge amount of information available through HighLevel’s own documentation, YouTube videos, online communities, AI tools and independent tutorials.
This approach works particularly well if you’re comfortable experimenting with software and have the time to investigate things yourself.
HighLevel is also becoming increasingly helpful from inside the platform itself, with AI tools making it easier to ask questions and understand features.
But there is a potential trap.
Knowing how to build something doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right thing to build.
You can spend hours learning how to create a complicated workflow when the business might be better served by a much simpler process.
2. Join Structured GoHighLevel Training
If you prefer somebody showing you how things work and being able to ask questions, structured training can dramatically shorten the learning curve.
At MarketerM8, we run a rolling programme of 13 free live HighLevel training workshops.
The programme covers:
- HighLevel Foundations for Beginners
- Email Marketing

3. Learn HighLevel While Building Your Own System
For many businesses, I think this is the fastest way to learn.
Rather than separating training and implementation, you work on your actual HighLevel account while learning.
Instead of watching a generic lesson about sales pipelines, we might build your sales pipeline.
Rather than learning workflow theory, we build a workflow around your enquiry process.
Rather than demonstrating calendars using a fictional business, we configure your appointment booking process.
You make progress on the business while learning how HighLevel works.
This is why I describe my approach as Done-With-You HighLevel implementation.
The objective isn’t for me to disappear into your account, build everything and leave you wondering how it works.
Where possible, I want somebody inside the business to understand the system and become your internal CRM Champion.
You’re Not Just Learning Software
This is an important distinction when choosing how and where to learn HighLevel.
I’ve worked hands-on in direct marketing since 1996 and with CRM and marketing automation since 2009.
Since 2009, I’ve helped hundreds of businesses automate and systemise their marketing, and through MarketerM8 I’ve personally onboarded more than 100 new HighLevel users.
I’m also an Entrepreneurs Circle Certified Coach and have helped Entrepreneurs Circle GenieAI subscribers implement AI and marketing automation in their businesses.
Why does that matter when you’re learning HighLevel?
Because knowing how to create an email campaign isn’t the same as knowing what makes an effective email.
Knowing how to build a pipeline isn’t the same as understanding a sales process.
Knowing how to create a workflow isn’t the same as understanding what should happen to a prospect after they enquire.
And knowing how to switch on an AI feature isn’t the same as knowing whether AI is the right solution in the first place.
HighLevel is the technology. Marketing and business thinking determine how you use it.
What I’ve Learned From Helping People Use HighLevel
Having personally onboarded more than 100 HighLevel users, there are a few principles I think make learning the platform much easier.
Don’t Try to Learn Everything
HighLevel changes too quickly and contains too many features for that to be a sensible objective.
Learn what you need now. Add more as your requirements develop.
Build Something Real
You will learn far more by building one useful workflow for your business than by watching ten workflow videos without implementing anything.
Understand Why Before How
Before asking how to automate something, understand why you’re doing it and what successful automation should achieve.
Keep Your First Automations Simple
A complicated workflow isn’t necessarily a clever workflow.
Simple, understandable systems are often easier to maintain and improve.
Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
One of the advantages of modern HighLevel is that users are increasingly able to build and configure things themselves.
We’ve seen clients use HighLevel’s AI tools to build websites, create Custom Objects and even help build integrations.
Learning by doing is becoming increasingly powerful.
How Long Does It Take to Learn GoHighLevel?
There isn’t a meaningful single answer because it depends on what you mean by “learn HighLevel”.
You can understand the basic structure of the platform surprisingly quickly.
You can learn to use an individual feature such as calendars or email campaigns relatively quickly too.
Becoming confident designing sophisticated workflows, CRM structures, integrations and marketing automation takes considerably longer.
But I wouldn’t make “mastering HighLevel” the goal.
The better goal is becoming capable of using HighLevel to solve the problems your business actually has.
Where Should a HighLevel Beginner Start?
If you’re completely new to HighLevel, I’d suggest starting with the foundations rather than jumping immediately into workflows or AI.
Understand:
- how contacts work;
- how conversations are organised;
- what opportunities and pipelines are;
- how calendars connect to contacts;
- and how workflows connect all these different pieces together.
Once those concepts make sense, the rest of HighLevel becomes much easier to understand.
Our HighLevel Foundations for Beginners workshop is specifically designed to help with this.
