“Waiting List” and “Baby Boomer Businesses” concepts from Daniel Priestley on the Steven Bartlett podcast

I was watching the Daniel Priestley interview on the Steven Bartlett podcast “Diary of a CEO”. It’s a fantastic interview full of nuggets from Daniel, you should definitely take a look. Click Here to watch it on Youtube The two big takeaways for me. The Waiting List Concept. Check out from minute 7 of the recording. Although not a new idea it is very powerful. I advised a client in the past to do this who sold live courses. I said when there was no live course available to buy then put up a waiting list. On the next course sale they did £500K in sales – just from the hot waiting list. Tools like Marketer-M8 (HighLevel) are perfect this for this job. And I have even created a Waiting List snapshot I can give to Marketer-M8 users. Baby Boomer Businesses. Check out the recording at 1hr 38 minutes with Daniel and Steven. Here Daniel explains that the big opportunity is not in building a sexy online “unicorn” business from scratch (luck + very hard work). But to acquire Baby Boomer Businesses that have run out of steam as the owner approaches retirement and the business is in need of revitalisation. Not the most sexy businesses, eg lift maintenance. But with the right deal they can be purchased for very little money upfront (like a management buy out) and flipped into valuable concerns. Daniel gives an example of one company using paper orders on spikes to manage the business processes. Why expensive “Guru” Cookie-Cutter Strategies and Templates Don’t Work for Your Business

You’ve seen them: the gurus in your industry flashing their fancy cars, designer watches, and million-dollar homes. They’ve got the “winning system” and are more than happy to sell you the so-called “secrets” behind their success. But here’s the harsh reality: these cookie-cutter solutions rarely, if ever, work. Industrial Espionage on the cheap – a nice little growth hack

I was just reading my recent copy of The Circular (Issue 168, page 27) from the Entrepreneur’s Circle and had to chuckle at this smart little growth hack. Nick Jenkins who founded Moonpig.com was telling EC members how he had grown his business from £2.5M to £45M. He was looking to scale and had discounted TV advertising as too expensive. But he noticed one of his competitors was using TV. So in a nutshell by placing a regular order for a greetings card from the competitor and recording the order number he was able to get a good estimate on the number of sales they were doing. (Because most companies accounting systems use a sequential ordering number.) And from this and making informed assumptions he was able to work back that the average cost per customer was £10, which was the magic number. And so this gave him to confidence to throw £50,000 into a TV advert. And the rest as they say is history.
